چکیده
This paper investigates the utility of different parameters from polarimetric interferometric SAR data for the identification of ground pixels in a woodland area to enable accurate digital terrain model (DTM) generation from the InSAR height of the selected ground hit pixels. The parameters assessed include radar backscatter, interferometric coherence, surface scattering proportion (based on Freeman-Durden decomposition) and standard deviation of the interferometric height. The method is applied to Monks Wood, a small semi-natural deciduous woodland in Cambridgeshire, UK, using airborne E-SAR data collected in June 2000. The 1428 variations of SAR-derived terrain models are validated with theodolite data and a LiDARderived DTM. The results show that increasing the amount of data used in the DTM creation does not necessarily increase the accuracy of the final DTM. The most accurate method, for the whole wood, was a fixed window minimum filtering algorithm, followed by a mean filter. However, for a spatial subset of the area using the υ3 backscattering coefficient to identify ground pixels out-performs the minimum filtering method. The findings suggest that backscatter information may often be undervalued in estimating terrain height under forest canopies.

Woodland Extraction from High-Resolution CASMSAR Data Based on Dempster-Shafer Evidence Theory Fusion
Mapping and monitoring of woodland resources is necessary, since woodland is vital for the natural environment and human survival. The intent of this paper is to propose a fusion scheme for woodland extraction with different frequency (Pand X-band) polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) and interferometric SAR (InSAR) data. In the study area of Hanjietou, China, a supervised complex Wis...

− Interferometric decomposition permits the identification of arbitrary scattering mechanisms in two interferometric SAR images and the optimisation of the interferometric coherence, using mathematically independent phase centres related to these scattering mechanisms. Polarimetric SAR interferometry (Pol-InSAR) is sensitive to the distribution of oriented objects in vegetation layers. It has b...

Five ascending and four descending ERS-1/2 tandem-mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) data pairs with useful scene coherence are used to measure the surface flow field of an alpine glacier in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The topographic component of the interferogram phase is calculated by using a digital elevation model (DEM) of the terrain and precise orbit data to rec...

A generalization of the maximum noise fraction (MNF) transform is proposed. Powers of each band are included as new bands before the MNF transform is performed. The generalized MNF (GMNF) is shown to perform better than the MNF on a time dependent airborne electromagnetic (AEM) data filtering problem. 1 Keywords— Maximum noise fraction transform, noise filtering, time dependent airborne electro...

The aim of this paper is to show that Dempster–Shafer evidence theory may be successfully applied to unsupervised classification in multisource remote sensing. Dempster–Shafer formulation allows to consider unions of classes, and to represent both imprecision and uncertainty, through the definition of belief and plausibility functions. These two functions, derived from mass function, are genera...
